Do You Lotion Your Armpits?

I get asked all the time how I don’t have discolouration and bumps in my armpit. I didn't know it was a big deal but when even my mom noticed one day and grabbed my arm up and inspected my pits I thought okay guess this isn’t the norm, especially for someone with my kinky hair texture and skin tone.

So what do I think is a contributing factor to these pretty pits? Lotion. Yes, lotion...

...okay, so it's not only lotion but its one significant difference that most people seem to not do. Every time I tell people this little fact they look at me sideways, but then again I recently discovered not everyone even lotions their body daily...a foreign concept to me.

Natural Loofah

Almost every day I scrub my underarms with a natural loofah. I do it when the loofah and my skin is dry before I shower and I use the loofah lathered with soap when bathing.

When I shave I try to shave with coconut oil. It's great for preventing rash and irritation caused by the blade on the skin. It also helps prevent ingrown hairs.

After hair removal, especially if I wax, I make sure to exfoliate with a natural exfoliating soap or just the loofah. My favourite bar is the Tea Tree Poppy Seed Bar Soap from Alberta Naturals, it's affordable and does the trick. But any exfoliating bar or body scrub will do.

You can easily make your own scrub at home mixing one part coconut oil, four parts sugar and a few drops of tea tree oil, or essential oil of your choice.

I always put some cocoa butter lotion on first, rub it in to adsorb before any deodorant. When it comes to picking a good cocoa butter lotion, I find that the less expensive basic types like the Vaseline brand or the store brand, are typically better. They are thicker and less processed with less additives.

When I do have some blemishes or discolouration I put a drop of tea tree oil before I apply lotion. Tea tree oil is great for combating ingrown hairs, acne, bumps, discolouration and

It may seem like a lot but it's very simple really:

  1. Double exfoliation

  2. Hydration/Lotion

  3. Essential oil if needed

Test it out and let me know your results. Of course nothing it instantaneous, you'll need to be consistent for at least a week to see visible results.
